The final domino from the Fran McCaffery fallout has finally fallen. After the 15-year Iowa Head Coach was fired following the 2024-2025 season, multiple future recruits decommitted from the program.
That included four-star prospects Joshua Lewis and Badara Diakite and three-star prospect Dezmon Briscoe. Their departures left the Hawkeyes with no recruits in the 2025 recruiting class.
Former Drake Bulldogs Head Coach Ben McCollum was hired as McCaffrey's replacement and had to rebuild the roster from scratch, including replenishing the recruiting class.
McCollum and his staff were able to flip an in-state prospect Trevin Jirak and Drake commit Tate Sage and added two to their 2025 recruiting class to fill the roster.
On Monday, the program lost their only 2026 recruiting class prospect and the last holdout from the Fran McCaffery era.

2026 in-state prospect Navon Shabazz announced he is decommitting from the program. After McCaffery was fired, Shabazz originally affirmed his commitment but has reopened his recruitment.
Before joining Iowa United Prep this past season, Shabazz starred for Davenport Assumption High School in Davenport, Iowa. During his sophomore season at Assumption, Shabazz averaged 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
After his sophomore year, he took his talents to Iowa United Prep to improve his game in preparation for college. At Iowa United Prep, Shbazz is coached by former Iowa guard Dean Oliver. Oliver starred for the Hawkeyes from 1997 to 2001.
247 Sports ranked Shabazz as a three-star prospect and the No. 19 combo guard (No. 196 overall) in the 2026 recruiting class.
