The 2026 transfer portal window for winter athletics is just a few days away.

With NIL expanding and no limits on transfers, the transfer portal windows have become a key part of college athletics, giving athletes a chance to pursue their playing careers anywhere they choose.

After Iowa's loss to Illinois in the Elite 8, the program is losing two seniors, including Bennett Stirtz and Brendan Hausen, leaving at least two open spots on next year's roster.

Transfer portal information

For men's basketball, the transfer portal window opens the day after the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament title game and lasts for 15 days. This year, the window will be open from April 7 to 21.

While the window is shorter this year, athletes are also allowed to transfer if there is a head coaching change. A 15-day period opens up five days after the new head coach is hired or publically announced.

Analysis

After one year at the helm of the Hawkeyes, Ben McCollum has more knowledge of what it will take for sustained success in the Big Ten and beyond.

The program is losing its best player in Bennet Stirtz, and McCollum will need to find a similar replacement. A do-it-all guard who can pass and shoot, while also not being a defensive liability, is one of the biggest needs for the program in the portal this year.

Iowa's top three needs are a starting point guard, more shooting, and a serviceable big man who excels in the pick-and-roll and can defend the interior.
