The Iowa Football program is not known for its prowess in the transfer portal. Head Coach Kirk Ferentz opposes building a roster solely through the transfer portal. Ferentz is adamant about recruiting the right players and building from within.

The Hawkeyes have added multiple talented players through the portal, but that is usually not the norm. This includes quarterbacks Mark Gronowski and Hank Brown, wide receiver Sam Phillips, and offensive lineman Bryce George.

Adding multiple quarterbacks through the portal is highly unusual for Ferentz and his staff, and on Wednesday, the quarterback room got even bigger.

The Hawkeyes added an intriguing prospect, quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski, from the transfer portal. After transferring from Wake Forest, Hecklinski has four years of eligibility remaining.

During his freshman season, Hecklinski played three snaps for the Demon Deacons. The Hawkeyes recruited him based on his high school resume.

During his senior season (2023-2024), Hecklinski threw for 3,835 yards, 50 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He was also named the 2023 MaxPreps Georgia Player of the Year, the MaxPreps National Player of the Year finalist, and was named an Adidas All-American.

Hecklinski was ranked as a three-star prospect out of Walton High School in Marietta, Georgia. He was also the highest-rated quarterback recruit in Wake Forest history.

Before committing to the Demon Deacons, Hecklinski had offers from Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Southern, and Central Florida.

247 Sports reporter Andrew Ivins classifies Hecklinski as a pure gunslinger, but should be categorized as a pocket passer.

Hecklinski joins a crowded Iowa quarterback room, and will attempt to carve out a bigger role with the Hawkeyes.
