Perseverance has paid off in a big way for Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes as they are on the cusp of pulling off a massive recruiting heist.

The Iowa program is known as one of the best developmental programs in college football, as evidenced by a program-record seven draft picks in this year's NFL Draft. Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeye program don't always attract top-ranked recruits, but they continue to pump out NFL-ready prospects.

If there is one thing Iowa gets knocked for, it's the passing attack and the program's failures to develop quarterbacks and wide receivers. That could all change in the blink of an eye this weekend.

4-star WR Lawrence Britt is ready to make his college decision

With Reece Vander Zee and Dayton Howard returning and talented transfers Tony Diaz and Evan James joining the program, the future of the wide receiver room is bright. It could get even brighter with a potential gamebreaker joining the room.

4-star Larence Britt was reportedly "blown away" on his official visit to Iowa City last weekend, so much so that he included the Hawkeyes on his final four list of preferred destinations. Britt is making his decision this Thursday, June 11, with Iowa thoroughly in the mix.

Britt, a Memphis, Tennessee, product, is right in the heart of SEC territory, and Iowa is attempting to accomplish something it rarely does: secure a highly-ranked wide receiver prospect. Britt is a true gamebreaker with elite speed and good hands, and it is easy to see why the Hawkeyes have ramped up their recruitment efforts since offering him at the end of April.

Having elite speed on the outside is always important, and Britt brings that to the table and much more.

Brining in Britt proves the Iowa offense is ready to make the jump

Iowa fans have heard for way too long that the offense is on the verge of taking the next step, but we just haven't seen it yet. Mark Gronowski was supposed to usher in a new age of Iowa offense, and even he struggled in the passing game.

With one of the most talented receiving rooms the program has had in a while, there are no more excuses, and the group must deliver. The quarterback situation is still in limbo, but the group is talented. If the program secures Britt's commitment, that signals the program is done talking and is ready to move to the next level.

We are not saying that Britt is an otherworldly talent who will single-handedly take Iowa to new heights, but rather, it is a nod to the program's willingness to finally emphasize the need for weapons on the outside of the offense. Having a solid run game year after year is fine, but it is high time we saw even an average passing attack.

An average passing attack has been one of the missing keys for the Iowa program to go further than it has in the past, and earning Britt's commitment is the first of many steps toward that goal. It will be an uphill battle, with SEC programs such as Arkansas, Florida, and Missouri also in the mix for his services
