Kirk Ferentz and the football program have stayed active on the recruiting trail throughout spring practices, adding two talented players to a blossoming 2027 recruiting class.

In traditional Iowa fashion, they locked up big offensive lineman prospect Reilly Newman and versatile two-way prospect Jake Theis.

With one offensive lineman already on board, offensive line coach George Barnett didn't stop there, offering a rising in-state OL prospect in the 2028 recruiting class.

Des Moines native Declan Heying is the latest OL to receive an offer from Iowa

Iowa loves to keep local talent in the state of Iowa, and its latest scholarship offer proves that.

Declan Heying wrapped up his sophomore season at Des Moines Christian High School in Urbandale, Iowa, and at six-foot-six and 275 pounds, he is the type of player Iowa loves to recruit.

His name, size, and skill immediately draw comparisons to former Hawkeye star offensive lineman Gennings Dunker, and he has the potential to be the next great OL to come from the University of Iowa.

Heying was impressive for the Lions last season, pancaking almost every defender that got in his way. Iowa noticed his significant potential and immediately offered him after he had spoken to Barnett.

Heying is quickly rising up recruiting boards, and even though he is only a sophomore, he already has over 10 offers, including from Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Tennessee.

There is no doubt that Iowa wants to add Heying to its offensive line to keep the strong tradition of solid offensive line play going, but it will have to beat out multiple high-caliber programs to earn his recruitment.

Rivals currently ranks Heying as a three-star prospect, Iowa's No. 4 overall prospect, the No. 24 offensive tackle prospect, and the No. 231 overall prospect in the 2028 recruiting class.
