Iowa needed some time off after being beaten up over the first six weeks of the season, and Tim Lester gave a critical injury update during the bye week.

The football program traditionally gives starters and head coach Kirk Ferentz a break during their bye week, letting Tim Lester step into the spotlight at the podium for the week's press conference. Lester discussed several things the program is doing during the bye week, but one of the biggest pieces of information regarded the health of his signal-callers.

Lester announced that both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski are 'ready to go'

Backup quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski earned his first career start against Washington last weekend due to Hank Brown's shoulder injury, and he made the most of it. He earned a Manning Award Stars of the Week nod after finishing with 202 passing yards and three passing touchdowns, helping Iowa win 41-24 over Washington in Seattle. Brown traveled to Seattle and was in uniform, but he couldn't do much during Iowa's short week of practice. The Hawkeyes' offense rolled with Hecklinski under center, and the time off did wonders for Brown, who is reportedly healthy.

Lester said that both quarterbacks are "ready to go" from a health standpoint, which is big for the program. Lester said it matters because they can push each other in availability and growth as players, giving the program two good options. The last part of Lester's injury update was very interesting, as he did not commit to naming a starting quarterback. The starting quarterback dilemma has been ongoing throughout the season, and although Brown earned the job, Hecklinski reopened the discussion with two strong performances against Ohio State and Washington.

The offense has been inconsistent, especially with a revolving door at quarterback, but Hecklinski's performance has given Lester and Kirk Ferentz something to think about. Lester was calculated in his responses and tiptoed around naming a starter, but that doesn't mean discussions aren't happening behind closed doors. Having both quarterbacks healthy is a major step in the right direction, but questions will linger about who starts. Each player brings something different to the table, and the coaching staff must think carefully about who gives the team the best chance to win. It wouldn't be surprising to see a healthy Hank Brown back under center against Minnesota in week eight, but no official announcement has been made.

It hasn't been said enough how beneficial it is for the Hawkeyes to have two quarterbacks who can run the offense effectively, but constantly having a new signal-caller under center isn't easy for everyone involved. The new-look offensive line has struggled at times this season, and consistently preparing for a new quarterback each week doesn't help. The passing game has also suffered, and although it's been better this season, it could be even more lethal with the numerous outside weapons.

Iowa can go at least four deep at wide receiver and tight end, but they haven't unlocked their full potential as they continue searching for the best quarterback option. Everyone is waiting for Kirk Ferentz to return to the podium next week before the Minnesota game, but even then, we probably won't have a clear picture of who the starter is until close to kickoff in week eight.
