If we've heard it once, we've heard it a million times this offseason: the starting quarterback competition is too close to call.
Iowa is just a few Saturdays away from the start of the 2026-2027 season, and we are still without a definitive answer about the starting quarterback. Kirk Ferentz and the program have kept the decision close to the vest, and rightly so, but the clock is ticking, and we aren't any closer to a decision than we have been all offseason. Multiple key factors are being considered, and while Ferentz hasn't revealed much, offensive coordinator Tim Lester announced the three biggest things he is looking at.
Lester revealed that there are 3 key items he is looking at in the starting QB battle
Neither quarterback has separated themselves through fall camp, and Ferentz recently confirmed that both quarterbacks are still firmly in the discussion. Hank Brown had a horrible open practice on August 15, while Jeremy Hecklinski shined, and the script slightly flipped during BTN's appearance on campus as Hecklinski struggled with turnovers while Brown "won the day." There was no concrete revelation on how or why Brown won the day, but that further proves how difficult this decision is. Ferentz has revealed zilch about what he is considering in the battle, but Lester recently revealed what he is focused on.

Turnovers, time to throw sound like they're similar for both Brown and Hecklinski. Didn't dive into explosive plays.
Lester claimed that the three big things he is watching are turnovers, explosive plays, and time to throw. He didn't elaborate on what he meant by "explosive" plays, but his revelation clearly shows why this competition is neck and neck. Hecklinski has often been described as a gunslinger, while Brown is the more careful passer who doesn't force the ball when he doesn't have to. Therefore, Hecklinski most likely comes out ahead in the "explosive plays" category, while Brown most likely comes out ahead in the "turnovers" category. With "time to throw" being the outlier, both quarterbacks have shown a better grasp of the offense than they did last season.
While it would be easier for fans and the media to know the starting quarterback right now, Lester and Ferentz are smartly holding off on the decision until they consider everything in play. The decision ultimately boils down to who gives the program the best chance to win, and that will hopefully be revealed after the decision is made in week one. Ferentz did claim there is a possibility that both quarterbacks play early on until they find their footing, which further proves the decision isn't close to being made.
Lester gave us a glimpse of what he is considering, but multiple factors are still in play before week one, and even if we get a decision before the first game, it could easily change from week to week until one quarterback firmly takes control.
