While some have knocked Kirk Ferentz for his indecision on the starting quarterback, he has been consistent in his responses.
Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski have been battling for the coveted starting quarterback role, and both have been up and down throughout the offseason. In the limited view we have gotten of each player, Hecklinski seemed to have the edge after a dominating display during Kids Day, but Brown hasn't made the decision easy. Ferentz has been adamant that both players have done well this offseason, and he has not been able to separate them. Ferentz's assertions continued through the Big Ten Network's training camp tour stop in Iowa City, but he did reveal some slightly new information.

After BTN analyst Dan Revsine made a startling revelation that both quarterbacks and the offense as a whole performed badly while he was in attendance, it muddied the starting decision even further. While one bad day won't make or break either player, it does reveal that neither has fully separated themself from the other. The competition remains extremely tight, but Ferentz made two interesting revelations that we need to pay attention to.

Ferentz didn't reveal much we didn't already know, saying the competition has been "really close to call," and that both players have performed well, but he did say that he feels the program should "probably" make a decision sooner rather than later. Ferentz also admitted that both players could easily play in week one until they get their feet on the ground, which implies that the competition is nowhere near as close to being decided as previously thought. While Ferentz's stall tactics are annoying for fans and the media, it is smart not to reveal too much too soon and to make the best decision possible for the program.
Iowa's offense isn't predicated on having a star quarterback under center, so if neither player has done more to separate themselves, Ferentz is smart to wait until the last possible moment to reveal who will take the first snaps against Northern Illinois on September 5. We all want a concrete answer, but at the end of the day, Ferentz and the program have to find the player they strongly feel gives the squad the best chance to win, regardless of the flak they will get from it. While a two-quarterback system rarely works, Iowa doesn't need either to do too much, and that works in its favor.
