Thankfully for Hawkeye fans, the unwatchable Iowa offense has steadily improved under Tim Lester, who is looking to continue that trend this season.
Iowa benefited from signing veteran and former Walter Payton Award-winning QB Mark Gronowski before last season, giving them a proven winner. While the offense didn't take the leap most people hoped for, there were positive signs that the scheme was advancing, and OC Tim Lester isn't afraid to tweak it. Now entering his third season in charge of the offense, Iowa is once again facing a starting quarterback dilemma, but that isn't stopping Lester from expanding the playbook.
Lester admitted the offense has more in its playbook than last year and way more than year 1
The Hawkeyes have never been what people describe as an "offensive juggernaut," and while Lester has been limited by the quarterback and other personnel he has been given, we have seen a slight improvement. Lester has done his best to adapt to Iowa's personnel, which is drastically different than what he had with the Green Bay Packers and the Western Michigan Broncos. Lester has always found ways to make it work, and he admitted that the playbook has grown before this season.

Lester did not admit why he decided to add more to this year's playbook, but it suggests he and his staff are fully confident in their personnel. The starting quarterback role is still very much up in the air, but the program is deep at the skill positions for the first time in a long time. It isn't very often that we get hyped about the offense, but it is happening. Albeit tempered, the hype around the offense has steadily grown thanks to very deep running back, tight end, and wide receiver groups, and it will get even higher once Iowa figures out the offensive line and quarterback situations.
While transfer wide receiver Tony Diaz has received most of the headlines for his highlight-reel catches and comparisons to Travis Hunter, the rest of the offense has been solid in camp, and it is slowly getting Hawkeye fans excited. Iowa has at least four go-to running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers, and with the capability to spread the ball around, Lester is capitalizing on it. He didn't say that his plethora of offensive weapons prompted him to expand the playbook, but we can infer that he wants to take full advantage of something Iowa doesn't normally have: a loaded offense.
The Iowa offense has been mired in mediocrity for many years, and despite an unknown quarterback situation, we might see the best offense the program has fielded in some time. The Hawkeyes have traditionally had good running backs and tight ends, but now with a loaded WR room, an expanded playbook is exactly what the unit needs. Hopefully, we are well past the days of running the ball three times and punting for field position, and it would be a welcome change of pace for the offense to help the defense instead of being propped up by it.
There are no guarantees that Lester continually adding to the playbook will suddenly fix the offense, but it is an encouraging sign that the coaching staff is attempting to strike while the iron is hot.
