The hype surrounding new Iowa WR Tony Diaz has reached all-time highs, and for god reason.
The talented University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) transfer wide receiver was a surprise signing by the Iowa program during the winter transfer portal window, and he already looks like the steal of the window. Iowa beat out several blue-blood college football programs like Alabama for Diaz's services, and his hype is already off the scale. It is very rare that Iowa beats out anyone for a talented skill position player, and even though he hasn't played an official game for Iowa yet, he is dominating headlines.
Mike Renner is the latest member of the Tony Diaz hype train
Diaz had an excellent season for UTRGV before transferring to Iowa, putting up 881 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns on 67 receptions, including a massive 17-catch performance against Incarnate Word last October. Diaz has the skills and potential to completely change the Iowa offense, and he has showcased that throughout the offseason. He has made multiple highlight-reel catches, putting Iowa defensive backs on posters, and he has made fans out of most everyone, including his head coach.
Kirk Ferentz recently compared Diaz's intense need to catch passes to Bob Sanders' tackling and Robert Gallery's blocking, which is extremely high praise. Diaz has given Iowa fans hope that the offense will turn around this season, and this shouldn't be a surprise.
New Iowa WR Tony Diaz is obviously a high-end athlete, but what really makes him special is his body control. Makes everything about the position look easy https://t.co/aOurSeWnGC pic.twitter.com/quGJEJUykA

CBS Sports' Mike Renner backed up all the hype surrounding Diaz by calling him the best FCS wide receiver since Travis Hunter, who eventually won the Heisman Trophy with Colorado. He also called Diaz a high-end athlete who makes everything about the position look easy. Iowa has not been known for having extremely talented wide receivers on a regular basis, and Diaz gives them something they rarely, if ever, have. Iowa is still entrenched in a starting quarterback battle, with both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski vying for the position, but regardless of who wins the job, Diaz will be a problem for opposing defenses if they can get him the ball.
Diaz has such great body control and hands that all Brown or Hecklinski has to do is put the ball in his vicinity, and he will make a play on it. He is a true ball-hawk who wants to make every catch, and that, combined with his freak athleticism, is a lethal combo. There is no guarantee Diaz will make the jump from FCS to the Big Ten and immediately light the league on fire, but his tape and immense potential are very encouraging. He has the potential to lead the Hawkeyes in receiving this season, and if the passing game can FINALLY get going, the Iowa offense has the potential to be a force to be reckoned with.
It is still too early to make any concrete determinations about what Diaz will do. Whoever earns the starting quarterback job will play a part in it, but for now, everyone is excited about what Diaz brings to the table and what he can potentially do for the offense.
