Even though Iowa is close to wrapping up fall camp, that hasn't stopped the Tony Diaz show.
Iowa got some amazing news from the recruiting trail when the program beat out multiple blue-blood programs, including Alabama, for wide receiver Tony Diaz. Diaz was brought in to help boost an Iowa receiving corps that has struggled with inconsistencies, and he is proving that he is ready to jump from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in the FCS to Iowa in the Big Ten.
Diaz's latest highlight-reel catch added more steam to his hype train
Diaz was a star for the UTRGV Vaqueros last season, tallying 881 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns, which would have easily ranked No. 1 on the Iowa offense. As Diaz has acclimated to the program and become more comfortable in the offense, he has made multiple exceptional catches, regardless of who is throwing him the ball. Kirk Ferentz and the coaching staff have yet to name a starting quarterback, with the competition expected to go right up to the wire, but Diaz continues to prove why it won't matter who is throwing him the ball: he's a playmaker.

In a recent clip from an August 13 practice, quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski threw a dime to Diaz, who went up and over the defender to make the catch on the sideline in a tight window and keep his feet in bounds. The fans in the "Jeremy Hecklinski should be the starter" camp will be extremely pleased by this throw, but Diaz's catch is even more impressive. Iowa rarely has an extremely athletic receiver who aggressively pursues every pass, and Diaz could give the offense a whole new element on the outside. All the quarterback inconsistencies aside, Iowa hasn't had a playmaker of Diaz's caliber since Brandon Smith in 2021, and now the offense could have three of them.
Diaz, alongside transfer Evan James and returner Reece Vander Zee, makes a dynamic trio of wide receivers, something Iowa rarely has. James was a standout at Furman before joining the Hawkeyes via the transfer portal this offseason, and Vander Zee is a massive target who has shown the ability to make highlight-reel catches of his own, but Diaz has been the most impressive this offseason. The Diaz hype has even extended to Kirk Ferentz, who compared him to former greats Bob Sanders and Robert Gallery with his nose for the football. During Big Ten Football Media Days, Ferentz exclaimed that Bob Sanders wanted to tackle you, Robert Gallery wanted to block you, and Tony Diaz wants to catch the ball.
That is extremely high praise from Ferentz, who doesn't often praise wide receivers. Diaz has put in the work and done all the right things, and he has the potential to be Iowa's first 1,000-yard receiver since Marvin McNutt tallied 1,315 receiving yards in 2011. If the offseason is any indicator of what this season will be, Diaz will be a top target of whoever lines up under center, and has the potential for a breakout season in his first season with the Hawkeyes.
