As we get closer to football season, we still don't have a clear picture of what Iowa's defensive line will look like.
During the 2026 Big Ten Football Media Days, Kirk Ferentz admitted they could easily rotate nine guys on the defensive line, but did not commit to naming the four starters. Projections continue to fly, and as the clock ticks down to Iowa's first regular-season game against Northern Illinois, we are no closer to having a concrete answer. While that doesn't necessarily mean that Ferentz and Phil Parker don't know who the starters are, it is still concerning that we don't know what to expect after replacing all four starters. One under-the-radar transfer is easily in the mix, and could be the answer Iowa is looking for.
Kahmari Brown has the potential to shore up the edge after transferring from Elon
The program is clearly aware of the DL issue and diligently worked in the portal to add more depth. Kahmari Brown, among the four defensive linemen the program signed via the transfer portal, was one of the more intriguing signings, and it is easy to see why he is considered a steal for the program. Brown led Elon with 16 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, three forced fumbles and eight quarterback hurries, and would fill a huge need for the program. After losing all four starters, DT Bryce Hawthorne is the only returner with significant game experience, and adding a player of Brown's caliber could be just what the doctor ordered.
Iose Epenesa, Kenneth Merriweather, Joseph Anderson, and Chima Chineke are among the many vying for snaps at the defensive end or edge rushing spots, but Brown has the veteran experience and physical tools to be an immediate difference-maker. Brown checked in at No. 28 overall on The Athletic's Bruce Feldman's annual "Freaks List," thanks to his dynamic athleticism, and this is welcome news for the Hawkeyes. While you can't put much stock in some of these preseason rankings lists, the "Freaks List" is definitely a fun one and points to the idea that Brown could be a massive portal addition.
During the offseason, Brown reportedly notched a 40.2" vertical jump and a 1.56-second 10-yard dash, both exceptional for an edge rusher. Collectively, Iowa has had a solid defensive line, but it has lacked true playmakers on the edge since Lukas Van Ness and AJ Epenesa. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Brown gives the Hawkeyes an element of speed and power on the outside and forces the opposing quarterback to throw quicker or forces the running back inside to where the bulk of the defense is.
There is no doubt that the Hawkeyes have multiple talented players across the line, but most of them are unproven. With Brown now in the fold, he could provide a boost on the outside and prove that he was one of the most underrated transfers in the 2026 winter transfer portal window. There is no guarantee that he starts, but he should easily make an immediate impact.
