Hard work and determination have finally paid off for fomer Hawkeye fan favorite Kate Martin.`

Martin's WNBA future was in limbo after suffering an injury during preseason training and being promptly waived by the Golden State Valkyries in early May. Ever since the Las Vegas Aces selected her No. 18 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Martin has carved out a solid reserve role and has endeared herself to fans. After a lot of uncertainty, Martin landed with the Los Angeles Sparks on a player development contract, and she made the most of her opportunity.

Martin is staying put in LA after the Sparks signed her to a standard contract

Martin quickly established herself as a solid reserve with versatility on both ends of the court, and she had a lot of people in her corner, including star guard Kelsey Plum. Plum constantly sung Martin's praises, including saying "Kate Martin for president," and that she hopes to play with her a whole lot longer.

Plum got her wish.

The Sparks organization announced they are converting Martin's contract to a standard WNBA contract for the rest of the season, much to the joy of all Hawkeye and Sparks fans. She put in the work and made an immediate impact with her new team, and LA general manager Raegan Pebly had nothing but praise for what Martin has accomplished in a short time with the organization. Pebly released a statement claiming that Martin has made a "meaningful impact" on and off the court, and they are excited to see her grow.

Pebly also stated that Martin brings versatility on both ends of the court and "consistently puts the team first." All Hawkeye fans already know how valuable Martin is to any team, and at least for one more season, she has found a home. What Martin does goes beyond the box score, and she makes winning plays when it matters most. Regardless of how much she plays, she will make an impact when she's on the court, and hopefully, she is in Los Angeles for the long haul.

Martin's leadership and character are well worth giving her a chance

Martin joined the WNBA in 2024, and since her rookie season, she has been with three different organizations, two this year alone. She might not be the best player on the floor, but she is definitely the hardest worker, and every organization has a place for a player like that. Martin's value goes way beyond the box score, and the Sparks made the right decision.

All she needs is a chance, and she will make an impact. Even though her numbers aren't near the top of the team or the league, she does other things that help her team succeed. Martin is averaging 3.1 points and 1.1 rebounds per game in 8.5 minutes, all career lows, but the Sparks saw enough to keep her around for the rest of the season.

It is a testament to her hard work and character that she received a standard contract based more on her intangibles than production, and we wish her the best in her WNBA future.
