Iowa Football's success is determined by the success of the defense. Iowa's offensive struggles are well-documented, and the defense is forced into action early and often.
During the 2024 season, Iowa finished 8-5 (6-3 Big Ten), and the defense kept them in every game (excluding Ohio State). The defense was strong, but they did not have a good season by Iowa standards.
Iowa finished ranking No. 11 in scoring defense (17.8 points per game) and No. 20 in total defense (318.4 yards per game).
Two members of the stout Iowa defense traveled to Las Vegas, along with Head Coach Kirk Ferentz, to represent Hawkeye Football at the 2025 Big Ten Football Media Days.
Ethan Hurkett and Koen Entringer, along with Logan Jones, spoke to the Big Ten Network (BTN) crew on desk during the final day of Big Ten Football Media Days.
Hurkett is a man of few words, letting his play on the field do the talking. In one of his few responses, Hurkett discussed the importance of Kirk Ferentz and what makes him a special coach.
Hurkett stated that Ferentz is special because he genuinely cares about everyone in the building and knows everyone's name. It does not matter if you are a freshman or a senior; Ferentz knows about you and your family.
Hurkett also touched on how the Iowa defense has been successful year after year, which Entringer echoed. Hurkett stated that they have a long-standing tradition of a solid defense, set in place by the players who came before them.
Entringer added that another reason the Hawkeye defense is successful defensive coordinator Phil Parker's attention to detail. Parker gets the most out of his players by holding everyone to the same standard.
Entringer spoke at length about how excited he is for his turn to show what he and the rest of the defensive backs can do.
He also talked about the standard set for the Iowa defense by star players in the past, but this season is a new team with new opportunities to succeed.
If the Iowa defense can return to their 2023 form, they will be difficult to play against next season.
