The transfer portal gives, and the transfer portal takes away.

With expanded Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and revenue-sharing options for players and programs, it has become common for players to hop in the portal when a better situation may be out there.

We have even seen players like Jayden Maiava sign "contract extensions" to stay with their programs for another season.

Now with the ability to seek direct payments, athletes are jumping ship from program to program like never before.

Iowa has benefitted from some transfers, including quarterback Mark Gronowski (South Dakota State) and wide receiver Jacob Gill (Northwestern), and has been burned by expensive transfers like Cade McNamara.

Before the ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year's Eve, the Iowa running back room took a hit following the report that one reserve will enter the portal.

According to Matt Zenitz and Eliot Clough, Terrell Washington Jr. will reportedly enter the transfer portal after three seasons with the Iowa program.

Washington Jr. started two games for the Hawkeyes this season and tallied 98 yards and 28 carries (3.5 yard average) and zero touchdowns in 11 games.

Washington Jr., a Wylie, Texas native, initially committed to the Hawkeyes in 2023, turning down offers from Duke, Houston, Purdue, and Vanderbilt, among many others.

During his Iowa career (2023-2025), Washington Jr. compiled 182 rushing yards on 49 carries and added 10 catches for 51 yards and a touchdown in 26 total appearances.

While it is unclear why Washington Jr. decided to enter the portal, he may have seen the writing on the wall with Jaziun Patterson, Xavier Williams, and Nathan McNeil eating up carries as backups to Kamari Moulton.

Washington Jr. can now get a chance at a fresh start with a new program, and he will have two years of remaining eligibility.
