The great news continues pouring in for fomer All-Big Ten kicker Drew Stevens.
Stevens capped off his Iowa career by passing legendary kicker Nate Kaeding for the most made field goals in Iowa program history, and he was an All-Big Ten performer for the Hawkeyes all four seasons with the program.
After going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, Stevens was initially invited to the Washington Commanders' rookie minicamp, and a day later, he got even better news from the organization.
The Commanders pivoted from inviting Stevens to try out to signing him
Stevens struggled with inconsistency throughout his Iowa career, especially during his sophomore and senior seasons.
When Stevens was locked in, he had one of the strongest legs in college football, regularly nailing 50-plus-yard field goals. Unfortunately, Stevens had ball-striking and accuracy issues, which caused him to fall out of the draft.
The talent and leg are definitely there, and he impressed the Commanders enough to earn a minicamp invite. Even better for Stevens, Washington decided he deserved an even better shot to make the roster and is reportedly signing him outright.

The four-time All-Big Ten selection had initially been set to attend Washington’s rookie camp on a tryout basis. Now ultimately expected to be signed instead. https://t.co/7x8Bdej8xB pic.twitter.com/gCnj58s2zJ
After initially reporting that the Commanders invited Stevens to their rookie minicamp, CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz is now reporting that they are signing him instead.
The Commanders cycled through two kickers last season, including Matt Gay and Jake Moody, and after re-signing Moody to a one-year deal, they are reportedly bringing in Stevens to compete for the job.
During his four-year career with the Hawkeyes, Stevens tallied 352 total points (228 from field goals, 124 from XP), connecting on 80 percent of his field goal attempts and 98.4 percent of his extra point attempts.
Stevens' chances of making an NFL roster significantly increased, and if he can shake off the inconsistencies that plagued him at Iowa, the Commanders got themselves a solid kicker.
