Over the past few weeks, Iowa Football has been ramping up practices to prepare for the 2025-2026 season. The roster will look different from last year's after several key pieces have graduated or entered the NFL Draft process.
The biggest missing piece is the workhorse running back Kaleb Johnson. Johnson carried the offense for stretches last year as inconsistent quarterback play doomed the Iowa offense. Johnson ended the season as a consensus All-American after rushing for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Iowa also brought in a new running back coach, Omar Young, to replace Ladell Betts. Betts must find a way to replace Johnson's production and leadership during his first season.
The quarterback room is another big question going into the 2025-2026 season. The Hawkeyes picked up star quarterback Mark Gronowski in the transfer portal, but his status for the beginning of the season is still unknown.
Gronowski was injured while playing for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits last season and had off-season surgery to fix the issue. If he is unavailable, the Hawkeyes must have a backup plan to bridge the gap until Gronowski is ready.
Before all these areas are ironed out and the season begins, Iowa will send representatives to Las Vegas for the 2025 Football Media Days.

Big Ten Football announced Wednesday that the 2025 Football Media Days is a three-day event, beginning on July 22 in Las Vegas.
Each of the conference's 18 universities will be represented by the head coach and three athletes. Iowa will participate on the third day of Media Days on July 24. This gives Head Coach Kirk Ferentz and the other representatives a chance to speak about the state and future of the Iowa program.
The Big Ten Network will live air all Media Days activities.
If you would like to attend the event, a block of rooms has been reserved at Mandalay Bay. Rooms are limited and are given on a first-come, first-served basis. Media schedules and a list of attending athletes will be released at a later date.
