Although we don't have any details, a recent closed-door scrimmage gave us a tiny glimpse of how good Iowa can be this season.

Jan Jensen and the Hawkeyes have been ramping up preparations for the 2026-2027 season, with Jensen offering a small glimpse during media days. Jensen said she is excited about what her team brings to the table, and although they are still working out the kinks in the new four-out, one-in offense, it appears to be going better than expected.

Jensen said she has been trending toward using the four-out, one-in offense, and now she has the proper personnel to execute it. The new offense relies on stellar ball movement and timing, something the program has been working on this summer. Six new players on the roster (four transfers, two recruits) make it difficult to determine how the offense will flow. Jensen has been excited by the squad's progress, and although she doesn't see them as a top-50 unit right now, a recent scrimmage proves they are further along than she admitted.

According to On3 Sports' Talia Goodman, Iowa reportedly defeated Oklahoma State 93-86 in a closed-door scrimmage, suggesting the offense is coming along great. The NCAA has strict rules about closed-door scrimmages, so although we don't have much information, Iowa putting up 93 points on a talented Oklahoma State squad tells us quite a bit. Oklahoma State finished 24-10 last season and added multiple talented transfers from the portal, including the No.1 overall transfer and former Iowa State Cyclone Audi Crooks.

Adding Crooks alone is enough to make the Cowgirls legitimate contenders, and if Iowa put up 93 on them, that is a great sign for where the Hawkeyes are. Defeating former rival Crooks is good enough, but also beating a tough opponent is welcome news for Hawkeye fans. Iowa also had a solid transfer portal window this offseason, adding First-Team All-SEC selection Dani Carnegie, along with Amari Whiting (Oklahoma State), Bria Medina (Knox College), and Jocelyn Faison (Georgia).

It is still too early to make any concrete determinations about the offense, but it looks great. Iowa has more versatility this season, especially with Carnegie, Whiting, and talented five-star recruit McKenna Woliczko on the roster, and this could be one of many big-time scoring performances. Giving up 86 points isn't ideal, but the team is still gelling, and the regular season hasn't started yet. If they are still giving up 86 points in December, we might have a problem.

The bare minimum we can infer from Iowa's reported victory over Oklahoma State is that the offense should be more than good. When it's clicking, not even some of the top teams in women's college basketball can slow it down. No one expects Iowa to put up 93 points per game in the first season of the new offense with a rebuilt roster, but it is encouraging that the squad has only been together for a few months and is already taking care of business against good teams.
