Kirk Ferentz's interesting admission created a position battle no one saw coming

Kirk Ferentz boldy exclaimed, "Not so fast, Hawkeye fans," after a startling announcement.

As we approach the 2026 regular season, Ferentz and the Hawkeyes have been thrust into the spotlight as everyone locks in for another season of Iowa football. Aside from Ferentz admitting he doesn't want to stop coaching anytime soon and that the quarterback battle is far from over, he made a shocking statement that created a previously unknown battle for the starting center spot.

Kade Pieper is no longer the guaranteed starting center after Ferentz's announcement

The Iowa offensive line was the best in college football last season, earning the Joe Moore Award for the best overall unit. The program lost three key pieces of the unit to the NFL after last season, including Beau Stephens (Seattle Seahawks), Gennings Dunker (Pittsburgh Steelers), and Logan Jones (Chicago Bears), but the group has been impressive this offseason without them. Returners Kade Pieper and Trevor Lauck have led the group, and both are guaranteed starting roles this season.

After a stellar season in his first season as the starting right guard, Pieper was rumored to be shifting to center to make up for the loss of Logan Jones. Everyone from the national media to EA Sports' CFB 27 was sure he was the starting center next season, but Ferentz's latest statement points in a completely different direction.

If you had asked a lot of people a little while ago who was going to be the starting center in game one, the overwhelming response would have been Kade Pieper. Now, Ferentz muddied the waters by claiming that if there was a game today, the starter at center would be Cael Winter and Piper would be starting at right guard. There are multiple ways to dissect this, but it's hard to argue that the news is very unexpected. Pieper is an extremely versatile offensive lineman, and not taking anything away from Winter, but if Pieper was being so heavily considered as the starting center, there is a reason for it.

Pieper is an All-American, albeit at right guard, so moving him to a vacant position is a smart idea. Another way to look at this news is from Ferentz's point of view, where he is clearly pumping the tires of someone we haven't talked about versus someone we have talked about nonstop. George Barnett isn't a fool, and if Ferentz is claiming that Winter would start at center if there were a game today, that is pretty telling of how well he has performed during camp.

This could be all smoke and mirrors by Ferentz and the coaching staff, but it also raises an interesting situation. If Winter has performed well enough in camp for the staff to even consider sliding Pieper back to his natural right guard position, then he has definitely improved this offseason. In the long run, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise because Pieper was already an All-American at right guard, and putting him back there makes the right side of the OL extremely strong. It also gives the program more depth at both positions.

If the two are comparable at center, why not play both in their more natural positions and let the rest sort itself out? We won't truly know what Ferentz and the coaching staff are thinking until the official depth chart is released next week, but for now, slotting Pieper in at right guard and Winter in at center isn't necessarily cause for alarm.
