Summer sports are in full swing for the Hawkeyes, while fall and spring sports prepare for next season. Hawkeye sports never sleep, and neither do we!

Lucy Olsen is headed to the Washington Mystics

It took longer than expected, but Iowa Women's Basketball star Lucy Olsen heard her name called during the 2025 WNBA Draft. The Washington Mystics selected Olsen with the 23rd overall pick. Olsen joins fellow draftees Sonia Citron, Kiki Iriafen, Georgia Amoore, and Zaay Green in Washington.

Olsen had a great first and only season with the Hawkeyes in Iowa City. After transferring to Iowa from Villanova, Olsen averaged a team-leading 17.9 points and 5.1 assists.

Olsen earned All-American Honorable Mention, First Team All-Big Ten, and Big Ten All-Tournament Team awards in 2024.

Olsen aims to bolster a Mystics squad that finished with a disappointing 14-26 record last season. After winning the 2019 WNBA Championship, the Mystics have struggled to replicate that success.

During the six years since their 2019 title, the Mystics have gone 76-94 and have made the playoffs three times, losing in the first round all three times.

Baseball bashes Bradley 12-5

Iowa Baseball welcomed Bradley to Duane Banks Field on Wednesday, April 16. The Hawkeyes hoped to keep their momentum against the Braves after dominating them 13-3 on April 1. The Braves jumped on the Hawkeyes early.

After three and a half innings, Bradley led the game 4-0. Bradley got their runs after a wild pitch and a three-run home run. The Hawkeyes responded in the bottom of the third inning. Iowa would tie the game and eventually take the lead after a six-run inning.

The Hawkeyes scored all six runs on four run-scoring singles, a run-scoring double, and a run-scoring groundout. Iowa would tack on one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the seventh, and two in the eighth inning.

After the 12-5 victory, junior pitcher Justin Hackett was credited with the win. This was the first win of Hackett's career. Sophomore Reese Moore led the Hawkeyes' offense, batting 3 for 5 with two doubles and two runs batted in.

The Hawkeyes travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, for a three-game series with the Michigan Wolverines from April 18 to April 20. The first game begins at 5:00 p.m. Central Time on April 18.

Trevin Jirak committed to Iowa Men's Basketball

Iowa Men's Basketball added a huge recruit for the 2025 class. Trevin Jirak originally committed to the University of Northern Iowa, but flipped to the Hawkeyes. Jirak was a star for West Des Moines Valley before committing to Iowa.

Jirak guided the Tigers to three consecutive state titles from 2023 to 2025. During his senior season, Jirak averaged 16.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.1 blocks per game.

After the 2024-2025 season, Jirak was named the 2025 Iowa Mr. Basketball. Jirka is the first Iowa Mr. Basketball to commit to the Hawkeyes since Pryce Sandfort (2023).

After three prospects decommitted from the program, Jirak is the first 2025 prospect to commit to Ben McCollum.

Kahlil Tate entered the transfer portal

Iowa Football lost defensive back Kahlil Tate to the transfer portal. Tate was a highly coveted recruit in the 2023 recruiting class. He had several offers, but he only made three official campus visits. Tate ultimately chose the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Before committing to the Hawkeyes, Tate was a star at Kenwood Academy in Chicago. He was a two-way star at Kenwood, playing defensive back and wide receiver.

During his senior season, Tate tallied 67 total tackles, two interceptions, and forced two fumbles. Tate did not see any game action in two seasons with the Hawkeyes.
