The 2025 MLB Draft provides the opportunity for approximately 600 prospects to join professional baseball organizations.
Since 2023, the draft order has been determined by the MLB Draft Lottery that occurs during the winter meetings. Each non-playoff team from the previous season enters the lottery to see who will earn picks one through six.
The team with the worst overall record has the best odds at receiving the No. 1 overall pick.
The remaining non-postseason teams, starting with the No. 7 pick, are ranked by who had the worst record to who had the best. Postseason teams are next, ranked by where the finished in the postseason.
The 2025 MLB Draft in Atlanta, Georgia, began with a bang. The Washington Nationals had the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, and drafted a 17-year-old shortstop.
Eli Willits, a shortstop from Fort Cobb-Broxton High School in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma, was taken with the first pick in the draft. He is the third youngest player to be taken, and the youngest since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1987
Pitching was also a hot commodity on day one as six of the top 20 prospects taken were pitchers. In the second round on day one, a former Hawkeye hurler heard his named called.

The Philadelphia Phillies selected Iowa left-handed pitcher Cade Obermueller with the No. 63 overall pick in the second round of the draft.
After the Phillies selected him, it became the second time Obermueller had been drafted as the Texas Rangers took him with the No. 585 pick in the 19th round of the 2024 MLB Draft. He ultimately decided to forgo the MLB to return to Iowa for his junior season, and it paid off.
Last season for the Hawkeyes, Obermueller compiled a 5-3 record with a 3.02 earned run average in 15 starts. he also racked up 117 strikeouts in 83.1 innings.
Obermueller also significantly improved his walk rate from 15.2 percent in 2024 to 9.0 percent in 2025.
The Phillies were impressed by his fastball (91 to 94 miles per hour) and his wipeout slider and could use him in the bullpen immediately with those two pitches.
If he wants to make the Phillies' starting rotation, he must develop his third pitch (changeup).
