Iowa forward Alvaro Folgueiras has had a busy 2024-2025. Last season for the Robert Morris Colonials, Folgueiras averaged 14.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists en route to being named the Horizon League Player of the Year.

Folgueiras was also extremely efficient shooting the basketball, shooting 54.8 percent from the field, 41.3 percent from beyond the three-point line, and 78.4 percent from the free throw line.

Folgueiras' final game in a Colonials' uniform was in a close 90-81 loss to Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

After a solid season for the Colonials, Folgueiras entered the transfer portal.

The Iowa Basketball program was in a transition period following the firing of long-time Head Coach Fran McCaffery and the hiring of former Drake Bulldogs Head Coach Ben McCollum. Still, they were able to secure a meeting with the sharpshooting big man.

Shortly after meeting with McCollum and the program, Folgueiras agreed to transfer for Iowa.

At the beginning of June, it was announced that Folgueiras would play for Spain in the FIBA Under-20 EuroBasket 2025 in Greece. Spain was placed in group D to begin the tournament and took on Israel in their first game.

Spain struggled offensively to start the game, scoring only 30 combined points in the first two quarters, and were down 50-30 at halftime.

They turned it around in the second half, outscoring Israel 44-29 in the third and fourth quarters, but their comeback effort fell short as they dropped the first game of group play 79-74.

Lucas Langarita led Spain in scoring with 28 points and added six rebounds and four assists. Iowa Forward Alvaro Folgueiras tallied seven points, eight rebounds, and six assists in the loss, and struggled shooting.

Folgueiras shot 15.4 percent from the field and missed all nine of his three point attempts.

Folgueiras and Spain will look to improve in their second game of the tournament against Poland on Sunday, July 13, at 12:30 p.m. Central Time
