Two Iowa sports teams closed out the first weekend in May with a win. For another, it was a disappointing end to the season. Here are the stories that made headlines over the weekend.

The No. 33 Iowa Hawkeyes Women's Tennis team traveled to Athens, Georgia, to battle No. 29 Georgia Tech in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Georgia Tech opened the match with a point after winning a tightly-contested doubles match.
Barbora Pokorna and Pia Kranholdt earned a quick 6-1 victory, but that was followed by Tech earning a 6-3 victory against Tereza Dejnozkova and Nikita Vishwase.
The deciding match was a wall-to-wall matchup where Georgia Tech's Kate Sharabura and Alejandra Cruz came back to beat Daianne Hayashida and Marisa Schmidt 7-6 (7-4).
Tech followed that win with three straight wins to take the match 4-1.

Iowa Softball entered the weekend series on a hot streak, winning its two previous Big Ten Conference series. The Hawkeyes welcomed Big Ten rival Rutgers to Bob Pearl Field for a three-game weekend series.
In game one on Friday, the Hawkeyes squeaked out a 4-3 walk-off win on a Devin Simon hit and Rutgers' error.
In game two on Saturday, the Hawkeyes won another close game on senior day. Iowa jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Rutgers threatened with runners on in the second and third innings, but did not cash in.
The Hawkeyes boosted their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back. Iowa won by that same score and took the series.
In the final game of the series, the Hawkeyes were looking to sweep and end the season on a high note. Iowa sent ace Jalen Adams to the mound in the closing game. Adams pitched another gem, allowing no runs on three hits. The win marked Adams' 20th complete game.
The Scarlet Knights out-hit the Hawkeyes three to two, but gave up too many free passes (seven) and had two errors that allowed the Hawkeyes to score four runs and win 4-0.
After the season ended on May 4, the Hawkeyes earned a six-seed in the upcoming Big Ten Softball Tournament. Iowa plays 11-seed Penn State at 10:00 a.m. Central Time on May 7 in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Over the weekend, the Hawkeyes traveled to Seattle, Washington, for a three-game weekend series against the Washington Huskies. The red-hot Hawkeyes had won eight straight Big Ten Conference series before Friday's matchup.
After dropping the first two games, Iowa's consecutive series-winning streak ended at eight. Iowa had plenty of traffic on the bases during the first two games, but failed to drive them in. In games one and two, Iowa left 18 men on base.
In game three, great pitching and offense changed the narrative. Iowa pitcher Reece Beuter allowed no runs on three hits in seven innings, and the offense scored runs in every inning after the fourth to cap off the series with an 8-0 win.
The Hawkeyes travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for a three-game series against No. 10 Oregon State. The series begins Friday, May 9, at 6:35 p.m. from Principal Park.
