As the Iowa football program diligently prepares for a tough road challenge against Michigan in Ann Arbor, multiple University of Iowa sports programs have been busy this week. Iowa volleyball, golf, and cross country all had busy starts to the week, and we have the three biggest headlines from the last full week of September.
Iowa volleyball stays hot after knocking off Milwaukee in four sets
The Hawkeye volleyball squad finished their weekend with a perfect 3-0 record, knocking off West Florida, Texas Tech, and Central Arkansas. The Hawkeyes continued their recent hot streak after defeating Milwaukee at Xtream Arena in Coralville in four sets. After dropping the first set, Iowa stormed back to take the next three sets 25-20, 25-22, and 25-17 to seal its fourth straight victory.
The Iowa defense set the tone for the match as the Hawkeyes tallied 18.5 blocks, a season-high. Iowa got contributions from all over the court, including Liv Morgridge (16 kills), Hannah Whittingstall (.625 hit percentage), and Jenna Meitzler (50 assists). Iowa now sits at 11-3 this season, the best record the program has had since 2006.

Before the Hawkeyes hit the road to face Michigan at the Big House, they learned the time and television network for their week-five game against Ohio State. The Buckeyes host Illinois at home in week four before heading to Iowa City in week five, while Iowa heads to Michigan to face the Wolverines. The Iowa-Michigan game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central Time on CBS, and it will remain the same in week five.
Iowa and Ohio State will face each other on Saturday, October 3, at 2:30 p.m. Central Time at Kinnick Stadium, and it is another early test for both programs. Ohio State already has one loss on its ledger after losing to Texas in week two and will come to Iowa City looking hungry. If Iowa beats Michigan, it could be a top-15 battle in week five, something everyone can look forward to.
Jayden Montgomery has been named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy
Fifth-year linebacker Jayden Montgomery has been a force not only in the center of the Iowa defense, but also in the classroom. Montgomery was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, presented annually to the nation's top scholar-athlete. Candidates must be a senior or graduate in their final year of eligibility, have at least a 3.2 grade point average, have outstanding football ability as a first-team or solid contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Jack Campbell was the first Iowa athlete to win the award in 2022, giving Montgomery a chance to join an elite group if he does the same. The NFF will announce 12-16 finalists on October 21, and each finalist will earn an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The winner will be announced in December and will earn a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship.
