For Iowa's defense to elevate its game, it must 'live up to the standard'

No one questions a Phil Parker-coached defense, and the numbers back that up.

Under Parker's tutelage, the Iowa defense has ranked in the top 20 in total defense every year for the past five years and in the top five in three of those years. Parker and the program might not always get many four- and five-star recruits, but they are elite at developing the talent they do have. The unit jumped back into the top ten in scoring defense (No. 8 overall) and total defense (No. 9 overall) after taking a slight step back in 2024, and two of the veteran leaders of the unit had a very simple response when asked about what they need to do to elevate their game this season.

Iowa had a solid season last year, finishing 9-4 with another bowl win added to its resume, but it struggled to overcome some of the best teams on its schedule, losing four extremely close games. Iowa lost all four games by a combined 15 points, signaling they were just a few plays away from having an even better season. While some argue that the offense needed to be better to support the defense, you win as a team and lose as a team, and the defense has a simple strategy to elevate its play even more this year.

Deshaun Lee and Jayden Montgomery were tasked with representing the defense during BTN's stop in Iowa City during their training camp tour, and they acknowledged two key ways the unit can elevate its game. Montgomery acknowledged that they are missing multiple key contributors from last season, but with a lot of new players comes a lot of room for growth, and they know that it won't be easy. The unit is taking it one day at a time and hoping to improve every day so they don't make the same mistakes multiple times. Lee gave a simple response, claiming they just need to "live up to the standard."

The Iowa defense is well-known for how suffocating it is year after year, and that is because of the foundation they've built. You don't get that kind of reputation out of nowhere, and Lee was paying homage to the elite players who came before them and set the standard. Missing multiple players or not, it is truly a case of next-man-up for the Iowa defense, and they haven't bought into the narrative that they will take a step back this season.

Iowa has a few question marks on the defensive line and multiple new players in the secondary, but the linebackers and secondary have received praise throughout fall camp. Reports of the demise or regression of the Iowa defense seem greatly exaggerated, and even though they have to replace multiple starters, that doesn't mean they don't have other talented players waiting to step up. The defense also did work in the transfer portal, bringing in several talented FCS transfers to contribute next season. The bottom line is that everyone can doubt the Iowa defense at their own peril, and the unit is ready to surprise a lot of people this season.
