The Iowa defense has been solid over the first few weeks of the season, taking positive steps in each of Iowa's first five games.

Phil Parker and the Iowa defense held the high-powered Indiana offense to 20 points and under 350 yards of total offense. They also forced Hesiman hopeful Fernando Mendoza to throw his first interception this season.

Despite their early success, the defense still needs to improve overall, especially after missing 14 tackles last weekend against Indiana.

Parker acknowledged Iowa's struggles tackling, but also stated he is proud of the hard work the guys put in each week.

During the coordinators' press conference ahead of Iowa's bye week, Parker stated that he is pleased with the team's hard work and effort, as well as the way they go about their business.

Parker was also asked multiple times about the issues the team has had with tackling, and he said it is tough to nail down.

They practice the proper technique for tackling or wrapping up in practice, but it has not translated to in-game action.

Parker said one way to help with the issue is for the team to become more consistent in how the players reach the proper spots, and they need to have a sense of urgency.

Parker was also adamant that everyone is "perfect" after the fact, but making high-impact decisions in the moment is never easy.

He also noted that the key for the defense going forward will be to eliminate missed tackles and limit big plays from the opposing offense.

The Hawkeyes have a bye week this week to reset and get back on track before a rivalry matchup against Wisconsin on October 11.
