Iowa basketball: Class of 2019 PG commits to Hawkeyes

While Hawkeye nation was focused on this weekend’s football game, Fran McCaffery and the Iowa basketball program received a commit from PG Joe Toussaint.

Recruiting never stops, and Iowa football season is a great opportunity for Fran McCaffery to bring prospective high schoolers to visit. The Iowa basketball program had a few key prospects in attendance of Iowa’s victory of Iowa State.

After the game, McCaffery was able to secure a new commitment for the 2019 class.

Three-star point guard Joe Toussaint from Bronx, New York committed to the Iowa basketball program over the weekend. Joe is a 5’10, 170 point guard who plays for Cardinal Hayes High School.

According to ESPN, Toussaint is the 39th best player at his position in the country, and the 12th best in New York. He holds nine offers from Dayton, Drexel, Fordham, Iona, UMass, St. Bonaventure, UNLV, and Wichita State.

On the prep basketball scene, Joe plays for the Bradley Beal Elite of NIke’s EYPL where has participated in 16 games.

The New York high schooler joins ESPN Top 100 Power Forward Patrick McCaffery as the only other commit in the class of 2019 for the Hawkeyes. Courtside Films tweeted out some video highlights of Iowa’s newest point guard.

What will be interesting to see is how Joe fits into the Iowa basketball program plans. The Hawks only have one senior on next year’s team, Nicholas Baer, but do have scholarship availability for the young point guard. In terms of roster structure, however, it remains to be seen how much playing time he will get.

The Hawkeyes have a glut at shooting guard with freshman four-star recruits Connor McCaffery and Joe Wieskamp on the roster, but have limited depth behind junior point guard Jordan Bohannon. Unranked prospect C.J. Fredrick and former student manager turned walk-on Nicolas Hobbs are the only true point guards on the roster. Do the Hawks plan to move Wieskamp or McCaffery to small forward to maximize their talent or will one of them be primarily handling the ball when Bohannon leaves in two years?

Regardless, it is great to add another exciting prospect to a very talented Iowa basketball team.
