The Iowa to NFL pipeline remains strong, especially on the defensive side of the football.

The Iowa Hawkeyes had five players drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, and the preseason was a chance for them to showcase their abilities.

During the three-game NFL preseason, two former Hawkeyes stood out with their stellar play and were named to CBS Sports' preseason All-Rookie Team.

Yahya Black and Jay Higgins were named to the All-Rookie team after posting solid numbers for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens during the preseason.

The Steelers drafted Black in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he impressed the coaching staff from the outset.

A factor in the Steelers' draft plan for this year was that the defense ran out of gas down the stretch last season, and head Coach Mike Tomlin was critical of their effort.

Black was immediately praised for his hustle and work ethic, and was given every chance to succeed in the preseason.

As the preseason progressed, Black continued improving and showcased his versatility during the Ravens' three preseason games.

On the initial depth chart ahead of the preseason, Black was listed as the No. 3 nose tackle, but the current depth chart has him listed as the No. 2 defensive end behind starter Derrick Harmon.

Ravens rookie linebacker Jay Higgins was one of the best stories of the preseason after joining the organization as an undrafted free agent.

Ravens' defensive coordinator Zach Orr had high praise for Higgins and stated he has no idea how no one drafted him.

The preseason gave Higgins a chance to showcase his talents and had one of the best preseasons by a rookie this season.

In a powerful video, Higgins was captured during the moment he made the 53-man roster, and he could not hold back his emotions.

As an undrafted free agent, it was rare for Higgins to make the 53-man roster, and he is currently listed as the No. 3 middle linebacker behind Roquan Smith and Jake Hummel.
