The roster rebuild for the Iowa Hawkeyes Men's Basketball team is in full force after the 2024-2025 season. The Hawkeyes had a disappointing 17-16 (7-13 Big Ten) season in which they failed to advance deep into the Big Ten Tournament.
After losing early in the Big Ten Tournament and failing to receive an NCAA Tournament invite, Iowa promptly fired Head Coach Fran McCaffery. Storm Lake, Iowa native, and former Drake Bulldogs Head Coach, Ben McCollum, replaced McCaffery on March 24.
After taking over in Iowa City, McCollum is charged with rebuilding a diminished Iowa roster. The Hawkeyes lost 10 players to the transfer portal (Cooper Koch entered, but returned to Iowa) and three recruits decommitted from the program.
On Tuesday, McCollum's roster rebuild took another hit.

Iowa redshirt freshman Trey Buchanan has entered the portal following the departure of Fran McCaffery.
Buchanan is the son of Indiana Pacers' General Manager Chad Buchanan. Chad Buchanan is from Des Moines, Iowa, and played basketball at Simpson College. Trey committed to the Hawkeyes in March 2024 and received preferred walk-on status.
Trey redshirted during the 2024-2025 season and did not play in any games.
Before joining the Hawkeyes as a preferred walk-on, Buchanan was a star guard for Westfield High School in Indiana. During his senior year, Buchanan averaged 14 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists for the Shamrocks.
Buchanan was a two-time All-State, All-Conference, and All-County honoree. He was named team MVP after his senior season.
After entering the transfer portal, Buchanan has four years of remaining eligibility. Buchanan is assessing his options and has not ruled out a return to the Hawkeyes.
