The transfer portal gives, and the transfer portal takes away. Over the past few weeks, the Iowa Men's Basketball program has relied heavily on the transfer portal to fill its roster.
After former Head Coach Fran McCaffery was fired last month, 13 players entered the transfer portal (one withdrew) and three future recruits decommitted from the program. McCaffery was replaced by Ben McCollum 10 days later.
McCollum is known for his roster-building skills. During his previous two stops at Northwest Missouri State and Drake, McCollum built successful rosters. In his lone season at Drake, the roster was comprised of 10 transfers or first-year players.
During McCollum's only season at Drake, the Bulldogs finished with a program-record 31 wins and won their first NCAA Tournament game since 1971.
McCollum has already gotten five of his former Drake players to transfer to Iowa and added an elite recruiter, Luke Barnwell, to his coaching staff. On Wednesday, a highly-coveted transfer portal target announced his interest in the Iowa program.

The agency for former Chattanooga Moccasins guard Honor Huff announced that he is zeroing in on five schools after entering the transfer portal. Iowa made Huff's short list of preferred destinations.
Huff was a star for the Moccasins last season. He averaged 15.2 points, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 36.5 minutes per game. Huff shot 41.6 percent from three-point range and led the NCAA in three-pointers made (131) last season.
Huff led the Mocs to a 29-9 record and an NIT championship title.
Iowa Head Coach Ben McCollum alluded to the fact that the Hawkeyes will need more shooting for next season, and Huff would be a perfect fit to fill that void.
On3 Sports has ranked Huff as a four-star transfer and the No. 116 overall prospect in the transfer portal.
