Kirk Ferentz and company have a knack for identifying underappreciated talent, and that is exactly what they are hoping for with one of their recent offers.
The program does not consistently sign a large number of four and five-star recruits, opting to find the right players and develop them in the system. Some of the best players on Iowa's current roster, including Kade Pieper, Kamari Moulton, and Zach Lutmer, were all ranked as only three-star recruits coming out of high school.
There are never any guarantees with any prospect that commits, but Iowa's track record of developing players speaks for itself. With that in mind, the Hawkeyes recently offered another three-star prospect in an attempt to jumpstart the 2028 recruiting class.
Iowa is getting an early jump on 2028 DB prospect Edwin Augustin
The program has recently been heavily focused on the 2028 class, and that trend continued with an offer to a ball-hawking defensive back prospect.

2028 DB prospect Edwin Augustin announced he received an offer from the Iowa program, listing tight end coach Abdul Hodge in his post. The interesting part about that is Augustin has primarily played defensive back for the Western High School Wildcats, but the Hawkeyes might be looking at him on the offensive side of the football.
It is still very early in the recruiting process for the 2028 class, but Augustin has attracted some top programs as he continues to develop. He currently has eight offers, including Florida State, Iowa, and Purdue, and Iowa is trying to make a solid impression before his junior year.
He has good size (six-foot-four, 180 pounds) for a defensive back, and he showcased his ability to be effective in pass coverage, while also getting downhill to help in the run game. The Hawkeyes' defensive back room will be one of the strengths of the defense this season, but they need to keep adding to it to maintain momentum.
If Augustin sticks at safety, he could give the Hawkeyes good size and athleticism on the back end of the defense. He must work on staying home and being the last line of defense, or good wide receivers in the Big Ten will take advantage, unless the program wants to move him to cornerback.
The talent is definitely there, and he could easily stick at safety if he puts the work in. It is still very interesting that Abdul Hodge was one of his primary recruiters, but before taking over as the TE coach, he was a solid player for the Iowa defense. Regardless, the program has definitely seen something that they like.
Rivals currently ranks Augusti as a three-star prospect, Florida's No. 63 overall prospect, and the No. 39 overall safety prospect in the 2028 recruiting class.
