There are very few organizations who have hit more home runs in the NBA Draft than the Oklahoma City Thunder in recent years.
After trading away multiple star players on several occasions, the organization has stockpiled a massive amount of draft picks and has hit on almost all of them. The Thunder's success in the draft is largely thanks to general manager Sam Presti, who has been OKC's GM since 2007, when the organization was still in Seattle. Presti began his impressive tenure by helping draft Kevin Durant, and he is now fully throwing his support behind another first-round pick.
Presti has had nothing but praise for No. 16 overall pick Bennett Stirtz
Presti has positioned the Thunder as perennial NBA Championship contenders after acquiring an impressive 32 draft picks extending through 2031. With one of those draft picks, the organization selected Iowa star Bennett Stirtz with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2026 Draft. After selecting Stirtz, Presti has consistently praised Stirtz's character and what he brings to the table.
Thunder GM Sam Presti on first round draft pick and Iowa guard, Bennett Stirtz:
— Eliot Clough (@EliotClough) June 26, 2026
"Bennett is a player that has a great feel for the game and has been successful at multiple levels. In an NBA context, I think some of the things he does will be really amplified. ... He's ready to…
Presti is one of the best in the business when it comes to drafting talent, with an impressive list that includes Kevin Durant, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Chet Holmgren, Josh Giddey, and many other successful NBA Players, showing he has a great eye for talent. There is no doubt that Presti traded up for Stirtz for a reason, which is a massive vote of confidence in the former Iowa star.
Presti recently said that Stirtz has a great feel for the game, and some of the things he does well will be "really amplified." He also said Stirtz has shown he's willing to make sacrifices in order to win. That is extremely high praise coming from one of the best general managers in the business, and it should give Stirtz a great feeling heading into his rookie season.
Presti's vote of confidence is exactly what Stirtz needs to start his career on the right foot
The mental aspect of basketball isn't discussed enough, and it will play a key part in Stirtz's development throughout his career. Stirtz has always possessed a stellar basketball IQ, but he can rest easy after Presti's latest comments. The basketball part will be easy for Stirtz, and now that he has the extreme confidence of his GM, the rest should fall into place.
Stirtz acknowledged that there is still a lot of work to be done, but he's ready to get started immediately, and he wants to establish solid relationships with Presti and his coaches. He is doing and saying all the right things early on, and Presti has noticed. Impressing your GM is one thing, but executing in front of thousands of screaming fans is different. Stirtz has his work cut out for him, but there is no doubt he is up for the challenge.
