The Iowa Hawkeyes added a familiar name to their 2025 recruiting class as Iowa City West tight end Mason Woods announced his commitment to the program Wednesday afternoon.

Woods, a three-star tight end, is the son of Hawkeyes special teams coordinator LaVar Woods, who played linebacker at Iowa from 1998-2000. The 6-foot-2, 218-pound prospect was primarily recruited by tight ends coach Abdul Hodge.

Woods was also recruited by Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri and others, but chose to stay home after taking a handful of visits to other programs, according to 247Sports.

Woods is listed as an athlete on recruiting services, and some programs reportedly saw him as a defensive player. In his junior season last year, Woods caught 35 passes for 535 yards and three touchdowns while adding 17 tackles and two interceptions on defense.

Considering Hodge was his primary recruiter and the program's rich history of pushing tight ends to the NFL, Woods figures to join the tight end room at Iowa.

247Sports ranks Woods as the No. 4 player in the state of Iowa and No. 46 ATH in the country.

Woods joins a 2025 class for Iowa headlined by another in-state tight end, four-star Thomas Meyer, who announced his commitment in February. Meyer is the No. 10 tight end in the country and the No. 2 player in Iowa according to 247Sports rankings.

Woods is the third in state recruit in the class for Kirk Ferentz including Meyer and three-star defensive lineman Joey VanWetzinga from Pleasant Valley.

247Sports ranks Iowa's 2025 class at No. 58 nationally with eight commits so far. The Hawkeyes are targetting 5-star EDGE Iose Epenesa, another legacy player, and in-state four-star offensive tackle Nick Brooks as well. Landing them is a high priority and would bolster the growing class in the national rankings.
