Iowa is Elite after dominant win over Colorado in the Sweet 16
How does it feel to be elite Hawkeye fans? The Iowa women's basketball team punched their ticket to the Elite Eight and what will be a rematch of last year's National Championship with a dominant win over Colorado.
The Hawkeyes haven't had back-to-back Elite Eight appearances since they did it in 1987 and 1988. Caitlin Clark and crew dropped 89 points on Colorado's tough defense while holding the Buffalos to just 68 points, 21 of those points scored in the later minutes of the fourth quarter when the game was already out of reach.
Clark was spectacular per usual as she scored 29 points on the day with 6 rebounds and tied her season-high of assists with 15. While Clark had to carry the team on her back in their second-round matchup against West Virginia, it was a team effort against Colorado in the Sweet 16.
After not scoring at all against West Virginia in the second round, Gabbie Marshall finished the day with 14 points going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Sydney Affolter was second in scoring with 15 points shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
The only time Iowa did not hold the head was 11 seconds into the game when Colorado made one free throw, but the Hawkeyes quickly took the lead with a layup by Clark and never played from behind from there on out.
In a post-game interview with Holly Rowe, Clark talked about how she felt this was a very big team win especially against a team like Colorado. She said they will enjoy this win for a little bit, but will turn the page tonight and focus on thier Elite Eight game.
Iowa's Elite Eight game against LSU was circled the minute the Albany 1 region was released. This is a very anticipated rematch of last year's National Championship where the Tigers beat the Hawkeyes. All eyes will be on the Clark vs. Angel Reese matchup and might I say, I can't wait to see how this one goes.
