Series history
The two programs played their first-ever game in October 1894 and have played every year since 1977, following a 33-year hiatus. Iowa has dominated the all-time series, with a 46-25 record. Iowa State has won three of the past four games, excluding Iowa's vacated 2023 win at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. Iowa has won its past seven night games at Kinnick Stadium, including a 42-3 win over Iowa State in 2016.
Prediction
Even though Iowa is a massive 13.5-point favorite in this game, all the pressure is on them. Iowa State has won three of the last four and isn't expected to give the Hawkeyes trouble after the program was decimated by outgoing transfers. Jimmy Rogers is going to have his team fired up and ready to go, and this game won't be as easy as oddsmakers think it will be. We rarely see a blowout in the series, with the previous five games all within 10 points.
Iowa is still dealing with a starting quarterback situation, and while it didn't really matter against Northern Illinois, it will against the Cyclones. That being said, the Hawkeyes have tons of offensive weapons across the board, showcased by Kamari Moulton's 183 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in week one. Iowa's defense is also suffocating and will take advantage of Iowa State's young running back group.
The Iowa defense will have a solid day, forcing three turnovers and making Jalen Raynor uncomfortable all game. The offense will do just enough, and Moulton will have another good day on the ground with 95 yards and a touchdown run.
