If anyone needed more proof that women's sports are growing in popularity, NBA star Tyrese Maxey just provided it.

Maxey has elevated himself into the conversation as one of the NBA's top guards, and he continues to prove that in his seventh NBA season. Maxey went from averaging 8.0 points per game in his first season to being one of the league's top scorers this year with 28.4 points per game, and although he is one of the NBA's biggest stars, a former Hawkeye still left him star-struck.

Maxey said it was 'really cool' meeting Caitlin Clark for the first time

Maxey and the Philadelphia 76ers have gotten off to a hot start after acquiring star Jaylen Brown from the Celtics and signing future Hall of Famer LeBron James in the offseason. The 76ers were on the road against the Indiana Pacers, and after an 114-109 win, Maxey had a special moment with former Iowa and current Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.

Maxey said he met Clark after the game, and it was the first time he had met her. He also said he loves watching her play because she's "cold," and he was doing his best not to "fan out" while meeting her. Clark is one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet right now, and for Maxey to say that he was trying not to fan out while meeting her is amazing. Clark is consistently in the spotlight on and off the court, and she has everyone's attention wherever she goes. She has stayed humble throughout and let her game do the talking, and even NBA superstars have noticed.

Clark had another amazing season for the Fever, although they ultimately fell short of their goal of winning a WNBA championship. Clark earned another All-WNBA First-Team selection, her second in three seasons. She finished the 2026 season averaging career highs in points (22.3), field goal percentage (44.6), and three-point percentage (36.1), and was finally fully healthy after an injury-plagued 2025 season. She was also in the MVP conversation for most of the season and shattered more Fever and WNBA records along the way.

She is a fixture at Indiana Pacers games, Indiana's NBA franchise, along with Tyrese Haliburton and other Pacers stars who frequently attend Fever games. Clark is the face of the WNBA for a reason, and she continues to draw attention to the league. The WNBA's popularity has skyrocketed since she joined the league in 2024, and support has been off the charts. It is one thing for fans to be star-struck when they meet her, but for Tyrese Maxey to feel the same is nothing short of amazing.

The league has made a habit of failing to properly promote and support Clark, but hopefully more of these moments will prompt some soul-searching soon.
