Mark Gronowski's weird tenure in Miami is officially over as he heads to the AFC South

After a strange summer in and out of Miami, former Hawkeye quarterback Mark Gronowski is on the move.

Gronowski was an extremely productive college quarterback, but he somehow fell out of the 2026 NFL Draft. Multiple organizations were initially interested in him before he signed with Miami, and although he said he had a good relationship with the organization, they couldn't decide whether or not to keep him. After the 53-man roster cutdown, Gronowski is on the move, ending his strange tenure in Miami.

The Houston Texans scooped up Gronowski off waivers

Gronowski initially signed with Miami to compete for the backup role to starting quarterback Malik Willis, and he struggled early in the offseason. He reportedly uncharacteristically struggled with turnovers in camp, prompting the Dolphins to waive him before their first preseason game. After a disastrous showing by the remaining quarterbacks on the roster, the Dolphins brought Gronowski back, and he played in Miami's final few preseason games.

Miami's revolving door at quarterback continued through the 53-man roster cutdown, as they traded away Quinn Ewers, acquired Kyle McCord, and released Gronowski for a second time. After the dust settled, the Dolphins re-signed Gronowski to their practice squad, completing the third time they brought him in this offseason. After another short reunion, he is on the move again.

After the Dolphins signed him to their practice squad following the roster cutdown deadline, they released him AGAIN, but it didn't take long for him to catch on with a new organization. The Houston Texans have signed Gronowski to their practice squad, finally getting him out of the mess that is the Miami Dolphins organization. After the Dolphins cut him loose for the third time, Houston scooped him up to potentially compete for a backup role with the organization. The Texans are in need of some quarterback help after Graham Mertz was placed on IR following a preseason injury, and Gronowski provides some much-needed depth.

The Texans currently have only two quarterbacks on the roster, including starter C.J. Stroud and veteran backup Davis Mills. With Mertz on IR, Gronowski has a good chance to compete for the third-string role if the Texans decide to activate him. This is a great opportunity for Gronowski to make an NFL roster, and he could even push Mills for the backup role.

Gronowski might have finally found a good situation after Miami

The Miami Dolphins are in limbo after releasing veteran starter Tua Tagovailoa, and even though they brought in Malik Willis, the offense won't be very good this season. Aside from Willis, the Dolphins had no idea what to do about their backup situation until trading for McCord, and it is better for Gronowski that he escaped the uncertainty. He now has the opportunity to compete for a backup role and has a good chance to do so.

Gronowski was a very accomplished college quarterback, setting the NCAA record for wins by a QB, throwing for 12,049 career yards, and throwing 103 career touchdown passes. He was also an FCS All-American, the Walter Payton Award winner, and the offensive MVP of the East-West Shrine Bowl earlier this season. He has the pedigree and the tools to be an effective NFL quarterback, given the proper chance, and he could get that chance in Houston. Stroud and Mills are locked into the top two spots, but Gronowski can easily take the third-string spot with Mertz out for the season after tearing his ACL in the preseason.

There are no guarantees the Texans will activate Gronowski and instead opt to keep only two quarterbacks on the active roster, but he has a chance to prove himself on the practice squad first.
