If you think March Madness was already maddening enough, think again.
This year, 68 teams were given the opportunity to win a coveted National Championship, with only four teams remaining on the men's side and two on the women's side.
March Madness has it all: Cinderella stories, buzzer-beating wins, and more drama than a soap opera, but that is all going to change with a new NCAA proposal to expand the playing field.
NCAA proposal to expand to 76 teams is all but set in stone
At the conclusion of this season, NCAA leaders, the selection committee, and the oversight committee are expected to finalize a proposal to expand the current 68-team field to 76 teams, and the fans are less than happy about it.
The NCAA is expected to finalize an expansion of the men’s and women’s tournaments to 76 teams soon after the completion of this year’s March Madness tournament, per Yahoo Sports' @RossDellenger.

Barring something unforeseen, “it will happen,” a high-placed source told… pic.twitter.com/qBQKdfR9Q7
The proposal would add eight games to the "First Four" of the NCAA Tournament. The format would be called the "Opening Round," with 24 teams playing 12 games over the first two days.
Then the 12 winners would advance to the original 52 teams awaiting in the bracket. If you are confused, as to why the NCAA would do this, so is everyone else.
I want to congratulate the NCAA for doing the impossible.

They got everyone on social media to agree. I haven’t seen one person who is in favor of this change. https://t.co/3dURG7RlE4
The general consensus among sports fans is that they hate this new proposal, with very few in support.

“The longer you try to ruin something, eventually you will succeed”. https://t.co/jkUUR1xW5U
The NCAA, alongside some of the biggest conferences have long pushed for tournament expansion, all but ruining March Madness as we know it.
This is a blatant cash grab. Expanding the field to create a 24-team opening round does not reward great basketball; it rewards average teams from big markets just so the networks can sell more ads.

They are sacrificing the integrity of the greatest postseason in sports purely… https://t.co/Q4GxHlNi6q
This fan went absolutely nuts about the proposal, calling it a blatant cash grab that seeks to sacrifice the integrity of the greatest postseason in sports by rewarding average teams a trip to the Big Dance.
The NCAA continues to prove it's the dumbest organization in sports. I suffered through the 2014-2017 Chicago Bears, so that says a lot.

Horrible for the sport if this happens. https://t.co/IsU65NXB7q
The NCAA has drawn the wrath of many sports fans who belive this is extremely bad for the sport.
How this affects the Iowa Hawkeyes
Excluding a magical run to the Elite 8 this season, the Iowa Hawkeyes have been on the outside looking in for the past handful of years.
If the tournament had been expanded sooner, there is no doubt Iowa would have made it, but they would not have deserved to be there.
Iowa will benefit from the expansion because it won't have to sweat making the field as often, but is that really what people want to see?
This proposal could lead to multiple teams getting in that have a ton of losses on their ledger, and it does not make for quality viewing.
