Iowa and Iowa State do not like each other, and that will not change anytime soon.

No matter what sport is being played, fans, players, and coaches have a certain disdain for the other that rivals most professional sports rivalries.

One of the biggest Iowa-Iowa State rivalries is on the football field, where the two in-state rivals have played each other since 1894.

Between 1894 and 1934, the programs met 24 times on the gridiron, with Iowa winning 16 of those 24 games.

The game was halted for over 40 years, from 1934 to 1977, until the rivalry was renewed and the Cy-Hawk Trophy was established.

Iowa has dominated its little brother with a 47-25 overall record in the series, but the Cyclones have won the last two meetings.

A big part of the rivalry over the past decade has been Iowa State Head Coach Matt Campbell, who has been at the helm of the Cyclones since 2016.

Campbell lost his first five matchups against Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes before finally eeking out a 10-7 victory in Iowa City in 2022.

The Cyclones have had more recent success in the rivalry, winning two of the past three games, but that could change after Campbell decided to leave the program.

On December 6, it was announced that Campbell was leaving Iowa State to become the next head coach at Penn State, moving from one Iowa rival to another.

After his departure, Ferentz had high-praise for the long-time Cyclone head man.

According to Hawkeye Insider Eliot Clough, Ferentz stated that he has "nothing but respect for Matt."

Ferentz also noted that he's not only been great for their program, but great for football in the state of Iowa.

It will definitely be different without Matt Campbell on the sidelines for the Cyclones next season.
