The Iowa rushing attack has always been the focus of the Iowa offense. Last season, under first-year coordinator Tim Lester, the scheme changed, but the focus remained the same.
Iowa had to rely on its rushing attack due to ineffective quarterback play and injuries to multiple signal-callers last season. The Iowa offensive line and running back group answered the call, putting up historic numbers.
Kaleb Johnson became a workhorse back for the Hawkeyes last season, rushing for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns, both career highs. Johnson's 21 touchdowns also set a new school record, surpassing Shonn Greene's 20 touchdowns in 2008.
After last season, KJ decided to enter the 2025 NFL Draft, and the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him with the No. 83 overall pick in the third round.
With Johnson in the NFL, the Hawkeyes will look to replace his production with a loaded running back room, headlined by Kamari Moulton.
Last season, Moulton was a solid contributor to the Iowa rushing attack, tallying 473 yards and three touchdowns on 84 carries. This season, Moulton is the projected starter of a group that will have depth.
Moulton spoke to reporters this week and stated that everyone has a different skillset, but it all works together.
In the interview, Moulton noted that "the main objective is winning," and he does not mind a running back-by-committee approach.
He stated they all want each other to do great and have the ability to do different things on the field.
Moulton mentioned that he sees a big opportunity in front of him and wants to showcase what he can do. With more opportunities, he believes he can contribute more to the team's success.
Regardless of who lines up behind Mark Gronowski during the season, the Iowa rushing attack is deep and has the potential to have another record-setting season in 2025-2026.
