Iowa Baseball finished the season on a sour note, going 2-10-1 in their final stretch of games. That includes a series loss to Oregon State and Oregon to finish the regular season, and being bounced 9-3 by UCLA in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
The Hawkeyes entered the season with low expectations, and were projected to finish ninth in the Big Ten. They surpassed those expectations, finishing third, and held the top spot in the standings for most of the regular season.
The addition of multiple Pac-12 schools sunk the Hawkeyes chance of finishing first during the regular season and in the postseason. Iowa went 1-6 against new additions Washington, Oregon, and UCLA.
They also went 0-2-1 against for Pac-12 member Oregon State, who competes as an independent.
Despite struggling down the stretch and being knocked out of the Big Ten Tournament in the semifinals, the Hawkeyes received uplifting news regarding one of their pitchers.
Iowa junior pitcher Cade Obermueller was named an All-Big Ten Tournament Team selection following his dominating outing against Rutgers in pool play.
In the May 21 matchup against Rutgers, Obermueller pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out 10, and only allowed four hits. The bullpen made it closer than it should have been, but the Hawkeyes eeked out a 4-3 win to automatically qualify for the semifinals.
Obermueller had a stellar junior season for the Hawkeyes. He finished 5-3 with a 3.02 earned run average and struck out 117 batters in 15 appearances.
After being selected by the Texas Rangers in the 19th round of the 2024 MLB Draft, it is unclear whether or not Obermueller will return for his senior season or join the Rangers organization. If he does go pro, the Hawkeyes will have more questions to answer ahead of next season.
