Iowa's bounceback performance against Washington came at the perfect time, and of course, it was on a Friday.
The Hawkeyes were reeling after a 31-14 home loss to Ohio State in a game that wasn't close, and they needed a get-right game before a week seven bye. Although Washington had lost two straight games entering the game against Iowa, they were a slight 2.5 -point home favorite. That didn't matter to Iowa, which blew Washington out of the water, and as impressive as the victory was, it is becoming a trend for the program on Friday road games.
Iowa is making a habit out of putting up massive numbers during Friday road games
Iowa's offense has improved since Tim Lester took over as offensive coordinator, as shown by three massive offensive outputs this season. Iowa scored 40 points on 507 total offensive yards in week one, 55 points on 640 total offensive yards in week three, and 41 points on 465 total offensive yards in week six, showing how far the offense has come. One of the most interesting parts of Iowa's offensive explosion against Washington is that it came during a Friday night road game, something it has been doing more frequently.
This is the first time Iowa has scored 40 points in a road B1G game since last season against Nebraska, which was only two road games ago. Anyway, my point is that game was also played on a Friday.

Maybe Iowa is the greatest Friday night road offense in the country?
It is a strange stat, but Iowa seems to play extremely well in Friday road games against Big Ten opponents. Iowa last scored 40 points in a Big Ten road game last season in Lincoln against Nebraska, and unsurprisingly, it was on a Friday. The Nebraska game was only two road games ago, and that makes back-to-back Friday games scoring 40-plus points. Much has been made about Iowa's inability to play well on the West Coast, notching their first win in the Pacific time zone since 1965, but they still play well on Friday, regardless of who it is.
Credit goes to the Iowa coaching staff for keeping the team locked in on short weeks, and something about playing on Friday makes Iowa put up a ton of points. Maybe it's all the talk about how bad Iowa's offense is, or how hard it is to play on short rest, but regardless, the program might have to consider moving more Big Ten road games to Friday. Kirk Ferentz and the program will never do it on purpose because he also hates short weeks, but Iowa has played well lately with less preparation.
They simply go out and play with less overthinking, and it's paid off. Short weeks on the road can cause all kinds of issues, including less time for injuries to fully heal, less travel time, and obviously, less preparation, so even though Iowa won't push for more Friday road games, they might have to if they keep putting up 40-plus points. Fornelli has a point when he says Iowa could be the best Friday road offense in college football, with much of the credit going to the players and coaches for not letting a short week affect their preparation.
For now, we can only appreciate that Iowa is currently 5-1 heading into a bye week, and hopefully the offense has figured some things out.
