#3 Iowa took down #2 Oklahoma State in a hard-fought match that saw the Hawkeyes come away with a 21-16 win in front of a packed Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday night. This was the 5th straight year the Hawkeyes have topped the Cowboys. It was neck-and-neck going into the 8th match of the night where the Hawkeyes held a slim 14-11 advantage. OK State had one of their best wrestlers, Dustin Plott (#3 overall at 184 lbs.) hitting the mat in what was thought to be an easy win for the Cowboys. In stepped unranked freshman Angelo Ferrari, who was taking the place of injured starter redshirt Freshman Gabe Arnold, and the young wrestler put on a show. He was relentless in his pursuit of Plott, taking him down in the second period, but was still forced to sudden victory after Plott's hard ride in the 3rd period. The freshman phenom held his own, and secured a huge takedown in the sudden victory period to secure the win 6-3. While it may have been senior night for the Hawkeyes, the biggest roar from the crowd came in support of the true freshman Ferrari who helped spark the Hawkeyes to an impressive win over Oklahoma State.

Analysis

The Hawkeyes used their home crowd to fuel them in a statement win against the Cowboys. The Hawkeyes have had the Cowboys number winning for the fifth straight year and 9 of the last 11 meetings. In typical Iowa fashion, they got help from across the roster, with Drake Ayala and Stephen Buchanan scoring major decisions at 133 and 197 respectively. Iowa was relentless all night, winning 6 of 10 matches and grabbing bonus points in 3 matches to fuel their victory over wrestling rival Oklahoma State. This impressive win comes in the last meet before the Big 10 Championships on March 8-9 where the Hawkeyes will look to capture their 35th title. They will have to get past powerhouse Penn State, who demolished the Hawkeyes 30-8 in their meet on January 31. The Hawks will look to take this momentum into the tournament and secure their first Big 10 Tournament since 2021.
