The first weekend in October was very busy for multiple University of Iowa athletics programs.

One of the biggest headlines from the weekend was Iowa dropping a 31-14 game to Ohio State in its first Big Ten home game, but much more was going on around campus. Football, baseball, women's soccer, and women's basketball all made headlines this weekend, and we have the four top headlines before the first full week of October.

Before a disappointing loss to Kirkwood Community College in a scrimmage last Friday night, the Iowa Baseball program announced that it is returning to Des Moines for another series at Principal Park. Principal Park is the home of the Triple-A Iowa Cubs and has hosted the Hawkeyes for the past two seasons. The series has been successful over the past two seasons, becoming a staple of the season, and this year will feature a Big Ten matchup.

Iowa will host Rutgers from May 14-16, 2027, at Principal Park as the series continues into its third year. Iowa has four players from the Des Moines Area, including Gavin de Jesus (West Des Moines), Ty Mikkelsen (Grimes), Ryan Stedman (West Des Moines), and Jaylen Ziegler (Urbandale).

Iowa football had a busy weekend with ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show" and "College GameDay" on campus, not to mention a top-15 clash on the gridiron at Kinnick Stadium. Multiple former Hawkeye players and alums attended events before and during the game, and Iowa had its work cut out for it against one of the best teams in college football. Ohio State took it to the Hawkeyes early and often, and although the Hawkeyes kept it close at half, the Buckeyes eventually busted it wide open to earn a 31-14 win.

The Hawkeyes struggled on both sides of the football, allowing 484 total offensive yards and tallying only 239. It was a rough day for Iowa in week five, coming off a thrilling 20-19 win over Michigan in week four, and the program has a short week to get ready for Washington. The Hawkeyes hit the road for a Friday night road game in Seattle before a much-needed bye week in week seven.

Iowa women's soccer welcomed Rutgers to the Iowa Soccer Complex over the weekend for a defensive struggle. The Hawkeyes came out firing in the first half, tallying 11 shots and seven corner kicks and holding the Scarlet Knights to just one shot. Berit Parten netted Iowa's only goal in the 36th minute, and the defense did the rest.

Rutgers was much more aggressive in the second half, racking up six shots with two on goal. Iowa keeper Braelynn Galt saved both shots, and the defense kept Rutgers off the board. Iowa finished with a 15-7 shot advantage and a 10-2 corner-kick advantage, pushing its record to 6-4-3 (1-2-3 Big Ten), earning its first Big Ten win of the season.

Before the 2026-2027 season, Iowa women's basketball added a massive sponsorship deal with in-state financial institution Corda Credit Union. Corda Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative that has served Iowans since 1953. As part of the deal, Corda will be prominently featured in a "multi-faceted" sponsorship platform on the video board and will be the in-game sponsor for one game every year.

Corda Credit Union branding will also be prominently featured on the south railing and multiple concourses throughout Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Corda will also be heavily featured on Iowa's digital platforms and in advertisements on live TV and radio broadcasts. Hawkeye Sports Properties holds the exclusive multimedia rights for all University of Iowa athletics programs and handles all sponsorships, in-venue signage, and advertisements for the Hawkeyes.
