We are just under a month away from the start men's and women's college basketball, as both programs are wrapping up final preparations.

Expectations are high for both programs, especially for the men's basketball program in year two under Ben McCollum. Iowa reached the Elite Eight last season and hopes to do it again this year. The women's basketball team is looking to improve on last season's early exit from the NCAA Tournament and has brought in multiple talented transfers to boost the roster. Your Hawkeyes news roundup from the first full week in October brings some great basketball updates.

Before the 2026-2027 regular season, Iowa women's basketball learned they will be featured on national television 14 times and on Peacock four times. In total, the Hawkeyes will be on Big Ten Network six times, Fox four times, Fox Sports four times, and Peacock four times.

Seven of Iowa's home games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be on national television and all nine Big Ten road games. The Hawkeyes finished last season with a solid 27-7 (15-3 Big Ten) record, finishing as runners-up in the Big Ten Conference Tournament before being eliminated in the second round of the 2026 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. The Hawkeyes have six new players this season, and will get the chance to frequently show off their new-look roster on the national stage.

Women's basketball fans pack Carver-Hawkeye Arena year after year, and that won't change in 2026-2027. Iowa is in rarefied air after selling out season tickets for the fourth straight season, with a limited number of mini-plan and single-game tickets left.

Iowa is coming off another solid season, winning 27 games, and tallying its 10th straight season notching 20-plus wins. The Hawkeyes lost nine players from last season's squad, including five to the transfer portal and four to graduation, and are looking to repeat last year's success. Iowa's first game of the 2026-2027 regular season is an exhibition game on October 29 against Maryville.

After a successful 2025-2026 campaign, the Hawkeyes were rewarded with 30 games on national television this season. 30 of Iowa's 32 games will be nationally televised, including 11 on the Big Ten Network, nine on FS1, five on Peacock/NBCSN, two on Fox, one on TNT, and one on CBS.

Iowa had an up-and-down regular season, finishing 24-13 (10-10 Big Ten) before making an improbable deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Ben McCollum pushed all the right buttons in his first season in charge, and the program has even higher expectations this season. Even without superstar point guard Benn Stritz, the squad is more well-rounded and is expected to make another deep run this season.

Iowa assistant coach Luke Barnwell was added to two prestigious assistant coaching awards before his second year with the program. Barnwell joined Iowa after two seasons with Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX, and has been a critical part of Iowa's recruiting strategy. Barnwell was named to the 2026 Silver Waves Media 100 Most Impactful/Influential High-Major Assistant Coaches list and the 2026 Roots 66 list before next season.

Before spending two seasons with Texas Tech, Barnwell successfully led the Sunrise Christian Elite team to a 178-28 overall record. He helped guide Texas Tech to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a 51-20 overall record.
