Even though Iowa baseball suffered an early exit in the Big Ten Tournament, effectively ending their season, you can't put that at the feet of Gable Mitchell.

Baseball is a team sport, and Mitchell did his absolute best to keep the Hawkeyes afloat with his defensive versatility and elite contact skills at the plate. Mitchell, the grandson of legendary Hawkeye wrestling coach Dan Gable, was a four-year member of the Hawkeyes after committing out of Iowa City High. Prep Baseball Report ranked Mitchell as Iowa's No. 3 overall prospect and the No. 373 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

Now, the talented shorstop is taking his versatility up north.

The Toronto Blue Jays selcted Mitchell with pick No. 193 in the sixth round

Mitchell improved every season in a Hawkeye uniform after making just five starts as a freshman. His senior season was by far his best season, and he is now heading to MLB after Toronto took a chance on the versatile infielder.

Mitchell was the first Hawkeye selected in the 2026 MLB Draft and is the ninth player in program history to be selected by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays are struggling mightily in 2026 after reaching the World Series last season. Mitchell is an intriguing pick for the Blue Jays, and even though he doesn't possess a ton of power at the plate, he has all the tools to be a steal. Former minor league baseball scout Joe Doyle called Mitchell a "sneaky late-draft sleeper" for his elite bat-to-ball skills as a switch hitter.

Mitchell experienced his best season as a Hawkeye last season, batting .360 with five home runs and 43 RBI in 56 games, all starts. Mitchell can play all over the infield, but he is projected to play second at the next level. He also brings solid speed, swiping 14 bases for Iowa last season. In four seasons with the Hawkeyes, Mitchell batted .314 with 14 home runs and 135 RBI.

According to Blue Jays Nation, the slot value for Mitchell's selection is $3.3K, which projects Toronto to likely pay underslot for the talented infielder.
