It has been an interesting path to the World Series for rookie pitcher Jack Dreyer.
Dreyer was a little-known relief pitcher in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization before making the opening day roster out of spring training this year.
Before joining the Dodgers' organization, Dreyer was an undrafted free agent who played college baseball for the University of Iowa.
While the Hawkeye baseball program has had success under manager Rick Heller, it is not known as a MLB factory that consistently pumps out Major League talent.
Dreyer is an exception, but it did not always look like he was destined for the majors after his career with the Hawkeyes.
The 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2021, Dreyer tore his UCL and underwent Tommy John surgery, effectively ending his college career.
Dreyer went undrafted in the 2021 MLB Draft, but was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Four years later, Dreyer made the big league club out of spring training, and had a stellar regular season in the Dodgers' bullpen.
Dreyer finished the regular season with a 2.95 earned run average (ERA), 74 strikeouts, 10 holds, and four saves in 76.1 innings.
After a solid regular season, Dreyer made the Dodgers' postseason roster.
Dreyer has only pitched 1.2 innings in the postseason, tallying one strikeout and two walks, and he has not given up a run.
After the Dodgers beat Cincinnati in the National League Wildcard, beat Philadelphia in the Division Series, and swept Milwaukee in the Championship series, they are headed to the World Series.
Not only are the Dodgers heading to the World Series, but Dreyer will be along for the ride as he made the World Series roster.
