During the fall, Saturdays are meant for one thing: college football. A staple of college football Saturdays for over 30 years has been ESPN's "College GameDay." Regardless of what team you cheer for, tuning into ESPN on Saturday morning is a tradition shared across multiple generations.
During the frigid fall and winter weather in the Midwest, staying hunkered down in front of the television on Saturday morning was a tradition in my family, especially when the Hawkeyes were on. As I grew older, I remember waking up early on Saturday to see who the College GameDay crew would pick in the day's matchups.
I will never forget waking up early on Saturday, September 26, 2009, when the Hawkeyes traveled to University Park, Pennsylvania, to take on the No.5 Penn State Nittany Lions. I woke up early, just in time to see Lee Corso choose Penn State over Iowa.
Even though Corso was wrong after Iowa upset Penn State 21-10 to hand them their first loss, I remember gathering with my friends on Saturday morning after a long night out Friday and watching Corso and the crew make their picks.
After 38 seasons as the face of Saturday football, Corso announced his retirement.

Lee Corso touched the lives of many college football fans. For 38 years, he created a special bond with the fans with his unique style and headgear picks. His iconic phrase, "Not so fast, my friend," will be remembered long after he has retired.
Nationwide, college football fans are sharing their memories and thanking Corso.

The Iowa Hawkeyes showed Corso love on social media and reposted his classic Herky headgear pick from the 2021 Iowa versus Iowa State Cy-Hawk matchup.
This moment will go down as the final time Lee Corso ever put on the Iowa headgear.

Corso picked the #Hawkeyes three times, going 1-2 in those games (this game was the only Iowa win).

Another Iowa fan paid tribute to Corso by reposting his only win when picking the Iowa Hawkeyes. On set with the famous Iowa alumnus Ashton Kutcher, Corso picked the Hawkeyes to beat the Cyclones and threw shade on Iowa State for not "seeing the trophy for a while." A truly legendary moment.
Nothing will ever be the same on saturdays in the fall. Waking up and watching Lee Corso put on the headgear was one of the reasons I fell in love with college football. And seeing him come into Tuscaloosa where I was living at the time was magical. Thank you coach corso!!

Memories continue to pour in after Corso announced his retirement. Nothing can replace watching Corso putting on the headgear before your favorite team takes the field.
This man made Saturday mornings fun for so many people.

He was informative. He was entertaining. Captured the magic of college football in every appearance.
An incredible second chapter from Coach Corso. The man behind the headgear. Thank you for everything, Lee. https://t.co/RaJnEWmj8R
The face of college football on Saturday made it fun for multiple people. It did not matter who he chose, but how he entertained the audience and the crowd with his unique style and delivery.
Lee Corso what a career man. Heβs a complete icon and a great person. Fun to watch, itβs been nothing short of an absolute pleasure. True legend. #NCAA

During his 38 seasons on the set of College GameDay, Lee Corso became an icon. He was a great broadcaster and a great person.
Over the years, Corso did not get the chance to wear the Hawkeyes' headgear often, and went 1-2 in the games he chose Iowa to win. The only win came after he chose Iowa in the Cy-Hawk rivalry game in 2021.
ESPN announced Corso's last broadcast will be on August 30, and they will add more programming to honor him.
