Cade McNamara just threw a TD against a power conference opponent for first time in a long time
Cade McNamara threw a touchdown pass in the first half of the game against Washington to be the most dynamic player on the Iowa offense. This was McNamara's first touchdown pass since Week 1 against Illinois State.
The fact that McNamara had not thrown a touchdown pass since Week 1 is not even the craziest stat of this game. The touchdown pass to Johnson against Washington was the first touchdown pass against a power conference opponent since 2021.
That is correct; you read that right since 2021 when McNamara was playing under Jim Harbaugh with the Michigan Wolverines. The funniest thing about it is that it last happened when the Wolverines were playing the Iowa Hawkeyes, the team McNamara now plays for.
You really can't make this stuff up. The Iowa offense has not been one to rely on the passing game; it is all in the run game. Kaleb Johnson, who already had a 6-yard rushing touchdown on the day, pulled in the 18-yard reception for the touchdown. Johnson is not only the leading rusher today with 109 rushing yards on 12 carries, but he is also the leading receiver with 22 yards on three receptions.
At this point, it is time to see if Johnson can throw the ball to because he can play just about any position in this offense.
McNamara has been up and down this season, and this stat just sums up his college career. Since his first year at Michigan, the spark that the college football world saw has yet to be seen again. While he can, for the most part, run an effective offense, that mainly means he is just handing the ball off to his playmaking running back.
Hopefully, fans can see more of this out of McNamara going forward because his play has been clean so far against Washington as the Hawkeyes lead the Huskies 20-10 at halftime.
