The former Iowa basketball star is headed to the Minnesota Timberwolves after signing a training camp contract.
Former Iowa basketball player Tyler Cook is signing a training camp contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the team announced on Wednesday. Terms of the agreement have not been released yet.
Cook (6-8, 255), who played for the Hawkeyes from 2016-19, finished his career ranked 20th all-time in scoring in Iowa history (1,315 points). Cook is also one of just nine players in program history to finish with more than 1,300 points and 600 rebounds over his career. He averaged 14.1 points and 6.7 rebounds in 93 games.
After going undrafted in 2019, Cook signed a two-way free agent contract with the Denver Nuggets following the draft, but was released shortly before the season started in Oct. 2019.
Cook spent the majority of the 2019-20 season in the NBA’s G League for the Oklahoma City Blue and Canton Charge, where he averaged 12.9 points (58.2 percent shooting) and 5.7 rebounds per game. He officially appeared in 13 NBA games for the Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Cook figures to just be a training camp body for the Timberwolves, but he could continue to work his way into being a legitimate NBA role player if he impresses again in the G League – assuming he doesn’t stick with Minnesota.
